Long Live the Martyr

Long Live the Martyr

Waleed is a 23 years old guy who was a volunteer in Al-Awda Centre. I’ve never seen him, but I heard his story directly from his mother and his friends.

Al-Awda Centre is a couple of constructions located near Tulkarm Camp, and separated by a narrow-destroyed street. The construction in the right side is a traditional building of three floors, where Down Syndrome children from the camp used to be taught and rehabilitated in. It also contains a kindergarten in addition to rooms for the staff working in the centre. The other construction, however, is very different; it is called the House of Youth. It was there where Waleed used to volunteer. If you go there, you will realize that he was not just a volunteer. Actually, Waleed is an artist. The walls there are full of paintings done by him. These paintings are pieces of art that reflects the Palestinian resilience and indeed they tell you a lot about Waleed’s personality.

Waleed’s mother says “he loved Palestine more than anything else. He was always saying that if I shall love anything more than you, then it’s Palestine”. Waleed’s friends say that he loved working in the farm that belongs to the centre. He was particularly in love with olive trees. In one of the early protests against the occupation in Tulkarm, Waleed was there for Palestine and he had courage enough to approach the ‘borders’ that separates Northern West Bank from the other Palestinian occupied land. He was carrying the Palestinian flag and wearing the Palestinian Kofyya when an Israeli sniper shot him down to become a martyr.
